Accident & Sickness policies are in reality short term Income Protection or Income Replacement policies.
Although there are a number of such short term accident and sickness policies available in the market we were never really able to find policies that either suited the requests we were receiving from the public, or policies we were really happy with the terms of.
This continual frustration with what all the insurers were offering made us decide to investigate the possibility of having our own policy on our own terms. Many underwriters just trotted out the same old standard cover branded in our name but we persisted until finally we were able to get an agreement with a Lloyds of London underwriter for the policy we wanted, on the terms we wanted.
There were a number of things we wanted our policy to address that others did not.
A) Our experience is that many high risk occupations are much more concerned about the possibility of suffering an accident than being sick, particularly the self employed who tend, if at all possible, to work when sick because it is their livelihood at stake, The Health Insurance Shop policy is the only one available in the UK where you can opt to separate the accident cover from the sickness cover.
B) They advertise payment after day one etc but the small print says first you must be off sick for 30 days. In other words 29 days and you get nothing. The Health Insurance Shop policy pays when it says it does.
C) If your employer pays you or you receive money from elsewhere they deduct that from your payment. The amount The Health Insurance Shop policy says it will pay you it does. What you receive elsewhere is not our concern.
D) Stops paying after 26 or 52 weeks. The Health Insurance Shop policy continues to pay for up to 78 weeks.
E) Can only claim up to 40%, 50% or 65% of your salary. The Health Insurance Shop policy allows you to claim up to 75%.
F) Cover’s all occupations but as soon as you are a high risk they exclude you or load your premium. The Health Insurance Shop policy has five standard types of occupation and even if you are not one of them we will find a way to cover you. From Body Guards in Baghdad to Super bike racers we can cover you.
G) What if an accident kills you or results in you breaking an arm or leg etc. No cover with the others. The Health Insurance Shop policy offers optional cover for these as well.
